Stafford Launches Free Summer Lunch Program
“The purpose of the program is to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session,” said Shannon Howell, Stafford County Public Information Officer. “The Stafford program has a Stafford superhero theme, and is called “Summer Heroes.”
Summer Heroes is available to children under the age of 18, disabled students and foster children. Beginning July 6 and continuing through August 4, 2016, children can obtain a free meal from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School, 150 Duffey Dr. in Stafford.
“Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School was chosen because it is in an area of the county where more than 50 percent of youth rely on free or reduced lunches during the school year,” Howell said.
The program will include superhero themed games and activities on Wednesdays, and visits by some of Stafford’s own special heroes on Tuesday and Thursdays, including fire and rescue and sheriff’s office staff.
The program is staffed by volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 63, Adventure Girls, and Stafford County Government, under the sponsorship of the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.
