CYT Presents “Seussical the Musical”
By Ashleigh Chevalier
It is fun, colorful and full of Seussian wit. Christian Youth Theater (CYT) Fredericksburg presents “Seussical,” a contemporary musical in which Dr. Seuss’ famed characters come to life. The Cat in the Hat narrates the tale, set in a fantastical web of word, music and fun.
Ninety children, 18 and under, worked week upon week through acting and dance classes, and musical rehearsals to learn and perform eight shows over two weekends.
Throughout the season, parents, friends and family members volunteer their time to build the sets, design and sew costumes, set lights, work in the box office, sell concessions and souvenirs, apply makeup, and perform in the live orchestra.
“Over 130 children auditioned, and 90 percent of those who didn’t take a performance role became a part of the production in other ways,” said Alison Mayberry, CYT marketing and publicity director. “The productions wouldn’t be possible without the help of the parents,” said the mother of four who has been part of CYT since 2008.
Mayberry knows first hand the legacy CYT has with the families in the community. “They perform with us while they are young, go away to college, then return and get involved again because they love the program.”
