Happy Birthday National Park Service! Have you ever wanted to explore all of the aspects of running a national park? Join us for our birthday Open House from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at Chatham Manor. We’ll celebrate 100 years of caring for our national treasures.

Each branch of the park will conduct hands-on activities, including demonstrations of historic preservation techniques, the opportunity for a closer look at some of the park’s artifacts, and a behind-the-scenes view of how the park manages incidents. Meet a park law enforcement ranger and check out their gear, or talk to a park historian about what makes our park so special. Enjoy a slice of birthday cake to celebrate with us.

This program is free and open to the public. Chatham Manor is located at 120 Chatham Lane in Fredericksburg.

The National Park Service will celebrate its 100th birthday on August 25, 2016, the anniversary of the signing of the Organic Act, which mandated the creation of the service “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park’s Open House on August 27 honors the legacy of the National Park Service’s creation, and looks forward to the next 100 years of serving the public.
