Mid-Atlantic food retailer Weis Markets will briefly close local Food Lion stores as it converts them to Weis Market stores. This process is expected to take less than a week for each location, the retailer said in a press release.

The following stores are scheduled to close Friday, Oct. 21, 2016:
– 515 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Fredericksburg
– 282 Deacon Road, Suite 106, Stafford
– 10871 Tidewater Trail, Spotsylvania
– 4153 Plank Road, Spotsylvania
– 736 Warrenton Road, Stafford

The following stores are scheduled to close Friday, Oct. 28, 2016:
10611 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania
10601 Spotsylvania Ave., Spotsylvania
7100 Salem Field Blvd., Spotsylvania

“We are reaching out to the Food Lion associates who work in these stores, and look forward to hiring and ultimately welcoming them to our company,” the retailer said.

Food Lion will pull items Weis is not taking — including fresh produce and Food Lion brands — and donating them to area food banks, according to Food Lion spokeswoman Chrissy Phillips-Brown. “Our Food Lion Feeds program focuses on hunger relief and we wanted to give back to the community as part of the transitions.”

The newly converted stores will offer a variety of local products, in addition to the more than 3,000 Weis brand products, the company said. “Weis Markets has a long-standing history with local farmers, and will continue to partner with local growers to provide shoppers with fresh and affordable food, including a wide selection of organic produce, baked goods, quality meats and fresh dairy items.”

The company’s conversion of 38 stores in Virginia is its second major acquisition in 2016. In August, it completed the conversion of five Mars Super Markets in Baltimore County, Maryland. Once the deals are complete, Weis Markets will have increased the number of its operating stores by more than 25 percent, and will operate 204 stores in seven states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and West Virginia.
