The Fredericksburg-Este Association, a sister city partnership with Este, Italy, is hosting two Italian cultural events in November 2016. Both programs are free and open to the public.

On Friday, Nov. 4, the Mid-Atlantic Wind Symphony will perform An Evening of Italian Composers and Arias, conducted by Aaron Noë. The program will feature Fredericksburg soprano Toni Maxine, works by Verdi, Puccini and Bellini, and music by local composers. The concert will be held in the nave of St. George’s Episcopal Church, 905 Princess Anne St. in Fredericksburg.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 7 p.m. This event is free; donations gladly accepted.

On Friday, Nov. 11, University of Mary Washington Associate Professor of Theatre Kevin McCluskey will present on “Corno Ducale, chopine and a braccio of silk velvet: Fashion & clothing production in Renaissance Venice.” (The sister city of Este is in the same region, an hour west of Venice.)

McCluskey is an expert in costume/fashion history, costume design and construction, theatrical makeup design, and period style for theatre, which examines how art, architecture, decor, dress, and ideas are combined to create the historical design for a period play. This discussion will focus on the fashion design and influence of the Veneto region during the Renaissance period.

Members and the general public are welcome to attend this free cultural lecture in Sydnor Hall at St. George’s Episcopal Church; use the George Street entrance for Sydnor Hall.

Conversation and light refreshments will begin at 6:30 p.m. Professor McCluskey’s talk will begin at 7 p.m., and conversation around the topic will resume by 8 p.m. Association members and board members look forward to meeting newcomers, and will be available to answer questions about the Fredericksburg-Este Association, and provide information to those who may wish to join.
