Two City of Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation Department nature program staff members received awards from the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) Chesapeake Region.
Nature Education Coordinator Linda Bailey was named Outstanding Interpretive Manager, and Nature Educator Mimi Dempsey was named Outstanding Front-line Interpreter.
“We are so fortunate to have this dynamic team of nature educators as part of our staff,” said Jane Shelhorse, Director of Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation. “I am excited that their great work has been recognized at a regional level.”
Bailey and Dempsey present nature programs for a variety of audiences, coordinate summer day camps like Camp Wildwood, and organize special events including the annual Earth Day Festival, Kids’ Fishing Derby, Spooky Stories by the Shore, and Fall Campout in the Park.
Many of these programs are held at the Nature Center at Motts Run Reservoir, 6600 River Rd. in Fredericksburg. The Nature Center is a rustic log cabin. Volunteers staff the center from 12 to 5 p.m. on weekends April through October.
Traditionally, Motts Run Reservoir has closed for the season at the end of October, but this year the park will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in November from 7 a.m.– 5 p.m., weather
permitting.
