The City of Fredericksburg will revive its New Year’s Eve celebration with a new name and new format in 2016. It’s called Downtown 31.

“Parks and Recreation is transforming First Night Fredericksburg into a new, but still family friendly event that hopes to bring residents and visitors to downtown, not just on New Year’s Eve, but throughout the month of December,” Timothy Baroody wrote in his August 17, 2016, City Manager’s Update.

“Parks and Recreation is working with Economic Development and Tourism and Fredericksburg Main Street to encourage people to participate in 31 different things throughout December, and then join in the finale event,” Baroody wrote.

The finale event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at Riverfront Park. At 9 p.m. there will be a ping pong ball drop, “that will include special ping pong balls good for gift certificates for those people lucky enough to find one.”

More details will be made available on the newly created Downtown 31 Facebook page and forthcoming website.

The City of Fredericksburg announced in October 2015 the cancellation of First Night Fredericksburg for that year. “City officials and staff reviewed feedback from attendees at last year’s event who overwhelmingly expressed disappointment at the event’s footprint,” then City Manager Bev Cameron said in a press release. “We’ll take a year off, re-group, and re-energize the event for next year,” he said at the time.
