Katelin Akens has not bee seen since Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015.
That day her mother Lisa Sullivan dropped her off at her ex-husband’s house, located in the 200 block of Oak Crest Drive in Partlow, Va., according to Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.
Katelin was scheduled to catch a flight from Reagan National Airport back to Arizona, where she was living withe her fiancée, Amber Rios.
“She flew out there on the first and she was supposed to come back here on the fifth,” Rios told Richmond’s WWBT News. “Her sister just had a baby, so she was going out there to meet her nephew.”
Akens’ family told the sheriff’s office the teen asked to be dropped off at Springfield Mall, from where she reportedly planned to proceed to the Franconia-Springfield stop to take a Metro train to the airport, Pearce said last year.
Authorities reported Akens never boarded her flight in Virginia, and family members reported that she never arrived at her destination.
On December 7, 2015, Akens’ suitcase was discovered in a drainage ditch off River Road in Spotsylvania County, near Motts Run Reservoir. “The teen’s wallet, identification and phone charger were reportedly among the items found in her unopened luggage container,” The Huffington Post reported.
“The investigation to date indicates Katelin and her property never left Spotsylvania County,” Pearce said on the one-year anniversary of Katelin’s disappearance.
Katelin Akens is described as 5 feet, 4 inches tall and 122 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. She has butterflies tattooed on her left forearm and stars on her right foot.
“Regardless of how insignificant you think your information might be, Sheriff Harris and his detectives strongly encourage you to come forward,” Pearce said. “We have the ability to rule out innocent persons. You have the option to remain anonymous, and every lead will be thoroughly investigated.”
According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, individual(s) responsible for, or who have knowledge of, the disappearance of Katelin may exhibit changes of behavior to include:
– Altering of physical appearance (growth or removal of facial hair, change in hair color or cut, etc.).
– Change in normal routine, which might include missing work, classes, or previously scheduled appointments.
– Displays of anxiety, nervousness, or irritability.
– Disposing of property without legitimate or reasonable explanations.
