A vehicle was struck by a Virginia Railway Express (VRE) train near the intersection of Brent Point Road and Arkendale Road in Stafford County just after 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016.

The occupants of the vehicle were able to safely exit before it was hit, Stafford Fire Chief Mark Doyle said.

VRE is sending buses to the Brooke station, and reversing trains 306 and 308 back to their original stations. Rail passengers are advised to expect delays of up to two hours, and possible cancellations.

The accident is blocking access to and from the Brent Point / Widewater community, which is located on a peninsula in the Potomac River.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
