Freezing Rain, Icy Roads Saturday Morning

Two lanes of I-95 are now open near Exit 118/Thornburg in Spotsylvania County, and the detour has been lifted, VDOT reports.

Update 8 a.m.
The City of Fredericksburg reports:
– Fall Hill Ave is being treated but it is terribly treacherous. Please stay away from the area.
– Plank Road over I-95 is also extremely slippery. Use extreme caution in that area.
– The Hanover Street Hill is dangerously slippery. Please avoid that area.

All runways at Dulles Airport are closed, due to ice.

Interstate 95 northbound is closed in Spotsylvania County near Exit 118/Thornburg for a multi-vehicle crash involving multiple tractor trailers, the Virginia Department of Transportation reports.

Sleet and freezing rain are expected to continue this morning, before changing to plain rain Saturday afternoon, Dec. 17, 2016. The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory until 12 noon.

“The roads in the city are very slippery, and though they are being treated, the Fredericksburg Police Department encourages you to limit your travel until it warms up,” said Police Department Public Information Officer Sarah Kirkpatrick.. “There have been several wrecks in the city this morning. Stay home and stay safe.”

Saturday, Dec. 17: Freezing rain likely before 11 a.m., then rain likely. Patchy fog before 11 a.m. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 53. Southwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Patchy fog after 11 p.m. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 50. South wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Sunday, Dec. 18: Rain, mainly after 11 a.m. Patchy fog before 8 a.m. High near 63. South wind 10 to 16 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: Rain before 8 p.m., then a slight chance of showers between 8 and 11 p.m. Low around 27. North wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 38. North wind 5 to 8 mph.
