From the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin work on Tuesday, Jan 3, 2017, to improve the condition of the bridge over Hazel Run on Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) in the city of Fredericksburg.

The bridge is located between Idlewild Boulevard and Kings Mill Drive.

The existing bridge, constructed in 1946, was damaged by the earthquake in 2011 and is structurally deficient.

Crews will improve the overall condition of the bridge by making repairs to the superstructure and substructure. The work will include surface repairs to the concrete substructure, improvement to slope protection, sealing of expansion joints, and milling and paving to improve deck drainage.

Construction should have little to no impact to motorists until April 2017, and is expected to be complete by the end of May 2017.

Message boards are in place to alert drivers to the upcoming bridge work.

The total cost of the project is approximately $1.1 million.
