The National Alliance on Mental Illness Rappahannock affiliate (NAMI-Rappahannock) will offer a peer-to-peer educational program for adults with serious mental illness who are active in recovery.

The 10-week course will meet 10 a.m. – 12 noon on Fridays from March 17 through May 26, 2017. Meetings will be held at the Kenmore Club in the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board’s Barbara C. Terry Building, 632 Kenmore Ave, in Fredericksburg.

The course is free to participants, and will focus on preventing relapses, coping with mental illness, and solving problems.

“These classes give participants the tools that could help them stay out of the hospital and lead successful lives,” said Brian Jackson, class facilitator. “The informational sessions teach about different types of mental illness, brain chemistry, and coping skills.”

The course is led by trained mentors, who personally live with a mental illness and are active in recovery.

Community members interested in registering for the course or learning more about the peer-to-peer educational program should contact Jackson, Ronnie Warner, or Lisa Dunn at 540-373-7737.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a nonprofit, grassroots, self-help group, which offers support and advocacy to individuals with mental illness, families, and friends of people with various mental illnesses

The local affiliate, NAMI-Rappahannock, meets the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Kenmore Club. Following an organizational meeting, separate support groups are held for family members and individuals living with mental illness. For details, visit http://namirapp.com
