Stafford County officials hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, for their new 5.7 million dollar animal shelter off Wyche Road.

The new shelter will almost triple the size of the current shelter, growing from about 6,000 square feet to 17,400 square feet, according to Stafford Board of Supervisors Chairman Paul Milde.

The larger facility will add areas not in the current shelter, including dedicated space for veterinary care, quarantine for sick animals, and rooms where potential adopters can spend time with the animals they are considering for adoption.

“We’ve waited a long time for this,” Milde said.

The current Stafford County Animal Shelter is located at 473 Eskimo Hill Rd.
