Fredericksburg native Julie Scelfo returns to her hometown to discuss her first book, “The Women Who Made New York.”

Scelfo, a former staff reporter and now frequent contributor to The New York Times, will be at Headquarters Library, 1201 Caroline St., in Fredericksburg, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 10. The event is hosted by Central Rappahannock Regional Library and the University of Mary Washington’s Program in Women’s and Gender Studies.

Written by Scelfo and illustrated by Hallie Heald, the book profiles 126 women, including legends like Brooke Astor, Ella Fitzgerald, and Edith Wharton, and lesser-known women like Emily Warren Roebling, who contributed to the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Prior to joining The New York Times in 2007, Scelfo was a correspondent at Newsweek, where she covered breaking news and wrote about society and human behavior. Her work has also appeared in numerous publications, including Salon, O, The Oprah Magazine, Epicurious, and Time Out New York.

Scelfo’s presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. The event is free.
