Walk ‘n Roll Fredericksburg
April 2, 2017, 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Quarles Petroleum parking lot, 1701 Fall Hill Ave., Fredericksburg.
Walk or Roll (wheelchair, stroller, wagon, bike, walker) on the 1-mile or 3-mile hike around Fredericksburg’s Heritage Trail. “The New Guy” Video Series Red-Carpet Premiere
Friday, April 7, 2017, 4 p.m. at UMW’s Hurley Convergence Center Digital Auditorium, 1801 College Ave, Fredericksburg, VA 22401
‘The New Guy’ is a collection of short films that follow President Paino through uniquely Mary Washington adventures, as he gets to know the university and the city, along with their activities and amenities. “The camera loves Paino, who grabbed attention in T-Pain Misses You, a humorous film about a lonesome university president on a student-less campus during holiday break. The 2013 YouTube sensation, filmed when Paino was president of Missouri’s Truman State University, garnered more than 100,000 views, and earned him inclusion as one of “America’s coolest college presidents.”

First Friday Fredericksburg

Fit History Hikes
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park will once again combine health and history with a new series of Fit History Hikes.
“These ranger-led hikes are designed to cover a lot of ground in addition to a lot of history, said National Park Service historian Becky Oakes.
The spring 2017 hikes range from two to six miles. All hikes begin at 10 a.m.

April 15: Fredericksburg: Slaughter Pen Farm (2 miles round trip) 
Join historian Becca Jameson to hike in the footsteps of the Union soldiers who temporarily succeeded in breaking the Confederate line of battle. Meet at 11190 Tidewater Trail, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.

April 29: Wilderness: Chewning and Tapp Farms (~4.5 miles round-trip)
Join historian Peter Maugle, and discover the dynamic stories of two farm sites transformed by the fighting in May of 1864. Meet at Stop #5 on the Wilderness Battlefield.

Grandparent/Grandchild Archaeology Day Camp
Tuesday, April 18, or Thursday, April 20, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Kenmore Plantation, 1201 Washington Ave, Fredericksburg, VA 22401
This one-day camp is an excellent opportunity for grandchildren and grandparents to learn together at George Washington’s boyhood home. Campers get a crash course on the entire archaeology process at Ferry Farm, and the importance of archaeology to history.
Cost: $30 per person ($25 for a second child)

Spring Open House at Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont
Sunday, April 23, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Enjoy the beauty of Belmont, and take a tour of the historic house and the artist’s studio. Wander the gardens and hike the woodland trails Drop-in Preschool Palette classes will be offered from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Yoga Foundation of Fredericksburg will be offering a free, all-levels friendly 60-minute yoga class on the grounds at 1 p.m. The Roots House will be open 12 noon until 3 p.m., during which volunteer guides will give the public a rare view of the building and share its fascinating history. The Soft Serve Truck will be selling frozen treats from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Free.

The festivities begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4 p.m.
At 5 p.m. there will be an exclusive preview hour for Highballs & Hydrangea ticket holders and invited guests only.
At 6 p.m. the Highballs & Hydrangeas party moves to Market Square.
Cost is $25 for museum members, $50 for non-members.

St. James’ House Spring Opening
April 24 – 30, 2017, from 1 – 4 p.m.
St. James’ House at 1300 Charles St. in Fredericksburg, Va.,
St. James’ House was built about 1768, and is one of the few 18th-century frame houses still standing in Fredericksburg. It’s open for tours only two weeks a year. Admission is $5 per person.

Egg-A-Palooza 2017
Saturday, April 29, 9 a.m. at Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center
Dee Daniels & Ted Schubel want kids ages 4-14 to build a 10x10x10 egg device that will hold a raw, uncook, untreated egg. Devices will be dropped from a fire truck from approximate 75-100 feet up in the air. If your egg survives the drop, you have the chance at winning the Grand Prize…$500.00 and half your weight in candy (candy tops out at 50lbs.)

James Monroe Birthday at the James Monroe Museum

Celebrate the 259th anniversary of the birth of our fifth president with James Monroe. There will be a book talk on the newly-reissued “The Autobiography of James Monroe,” with historian William Ferraro. There will also be family-friendly activities, music, and refreshments.

Culpeper’s Fifth Annual ‘Gnarly Hops and Barley Fest’ Craft Beer Festival
Saturday, April 29, 2017, 12 – 5 p.m. in the Spencer Street Lot in Historic Downtown Culpeper, VA 22701
The Gnarly Hops brew fest is back, with live music and more than 70 beer and cider selections. Sample Virginia and nationally brewed beers, including many area favorites.
