STAFFORD, VA – The Stafford School Board voted unanimously on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 to redistrict students from Margaret Brent Elementary School to Falmouth Elementary School.

School Board members approved Option Three, which moves 65 students residing in Area Planning Unit 189, the Manor at England Run Apartments from Margaret Brent to Falmouth Elementary School.

The School Board decided to consider redistricting to address the increasing current and projected enrollment of students in the division. The increasing number of students attending Margaret Brent this year was of particular concern. Margaret Brent Elementary School is currently operating at 98 percent of design capacity.

A Community Town Hall meeting hosted by School Board Vice Chair and Falmouth area representative Scott Hirons was held as well as a Public Hearing at T. Benton Gayle Middle School to hear citizen comments on redistricting.

“The growth in the Margaret Brent Elementary School attendance zone has increased the student population there, beyond projections. It was important to provide relief to that school as well as protect the programs at Falmouth Elementary School. I am pleased the School Board unanimously supported the option that did both. I know the new Falmouth Falcons will be welcomed with open wings in the 2017- 18 school year,” said Stafford School Board Vice Chair Scott Hirons, Falmouth District.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that our resources are used in an efficient manner. Redistricting is a tool available to the School Board to ensure we are making good use of classroom space throughout the division. The School Board’s action demonstrates their commitment to good stewardship in providing great teaching and learning experiences for our students,” said Stafford County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. W. Bruce Benson.

SCPS will send information to families affected by the redistricting this week. This attendance change takes place at the start of the 2017-18 school year.
