Stafford County

Interstate 95 Southbound

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Thursday, 10 p.m. ˗˗ 5 a.m.  A single, left lane on southbound I-95 will be blocked near Exit 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg) to allow crews to take soil samples. Expect overnight, brief delays.

Interstate 95 Northbound

(New) Monday ˗˗ Thursday, 9 p.m.˗˗ 4:30 a.m. and Friday, 12 a.m. ˗˗ 4 a.m. Two lanes on I-95 northbound near Exit 140 (Courthouse Road/Stafford) will be closed to allow crews to remove and install overhead signs as part of the Express Lanes southern terminus extension. A single lane will be closed at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open to traffic by 4:30 a.m. each day.  On Friday, two lanes will be blocked at midnight till 4 a.m.  Motorists should expect overnight delays.

Route 1

(New) Sunday ˗˗ Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ˗˗ 5:30 a.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) near Telegraph Road and the Stafford, Prince William County line for a milling and paving operation. Expect brief delays.

Route 17 at Washington Street

(New) Monday ˗˗ Tuesday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. A single, right lane on southbound Route 17 will be blocked at the Washington Street intersection for guardrail repair.

Route 17

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 4 a.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route 17 near Stafford Lakes Parkway and Sanford Drive. Crews will be working to install traffic control devices at various intersections along Route 17. Be alert to crew and equipment with this mobile work zone. Expect brief delays.

Route 610 (Garrisonville Road)

Monday ˗˗ Saturday, 8 p.m. ˗˗ 5 a.m. Motorists can expect alternating, single lane closures overnight on Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) from Shenandoah Lane to Travis Lane as crews install a new drainage system. This work is connected to the Stafford County widening of Garrisonville Road.

Route 627 (Mountain View Road)

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Saturday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mountain View Road near Centreport Parkway and Kellogs Mill Road for a paving operation. Flaggers and a pilot truck will direct motorists through the work zone, one lane at a time. Expect delays.

Route 630 (Courthouse Road)

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Thursday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane and Ramoth Church Road for clearing and grubbing operations. This work is part of the project to widen the road. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone. Expect delays.

Route 677 (Mount Hope Church Road)

(New) Monday ˗˗ Tuesday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mount Hope Church Road near Brooke Road for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Route 684 (Mine Road)

(Update) Sunday ˗˗ Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ˗˗5:30 a.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on Mine Road between Exeter Lane and Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) for a paving operation. Expect overnight travel delays.

Secondary Route Restriping

(New) Sunday ˗˗ Saturday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on various, low-volume secondary routes throughout Stafford County. Crews will begin a project to restripe existing line markings on various roads. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.

 

Routine Maintenance

Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

  • Route 3 (Kings Highway) ˗˗ ditch cleaning and brush removal
  • Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) ˗˗ pothole patching
  • Route 630 (Courthouse Road) ˗˗ pothole patching

City of Fredericksburg

Carl D. Silver Parkway

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Thursday, 10 p.m. ˗˗ 7 a.m. All lanes on Carl D. Silver Parkway at Route 3 (Plank Road) will be blocked to allow crews to work on relocating water and sewer lines. Traffic will not be permitted to enter or exit at the main entrance to the Central Park shopping area. Signs are posted along the detour route to Central Park Boulevard, Trade Street and Commerce Street.  This work is part of a project to improve safety on I-95 at the Exit 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg) interchange.

Chatham Bridge

(New) Thursday, 7 p.m. ˗˗ 7 a.m.  A single, westbound lane on Route 3 at the Chatham Bridge on the city side will be blocked to allow crews to take soil samples. Be alert to crew and construction equipment. Expect brief delays.

 

Spotsylvania County

Interstate 95

(New) Monday ˗˗ Thursday, 9 a.m. ˗˗3:30 p.m. A single, left lane will be blocked on southbound and northbound I-95 near Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) for guardrail repair.

Interstate 95 Southbound

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 p.m. ˗˗  4:30 a.m. Two lanes on I-95 southbound at the Ni River Bridge will be closed to allow crews to continue the bridge improvement project. The Ni River Bridge is located at mile marker 121, just south of Exit 126/Massaponax. A single lane will be closed at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open to traffic by 4:30 a.m. each day. Motorists should expect overnight delays.

Interstate 95 Northbound

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 4:30 a.m. Two lanes on I-95 northbound at the Ni River Bridge will be closed to allow crews to continue the bridge improvement project. The Ni River Bridge is located at mile marker 121, just north of Exit 118/Thornburg. A single lane will be closed at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open to traffic by 4:30 a.m. each day. Motorists should expect overnight delays.

Route 620 (Harrison Road)

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 5:30 p.m. All lanes will remain open on Harrison Road near Route 1 but work will continue behind construction barrels as part of the project to build new turn lanes and improve the Route 1 and Harrison Road intersection.

Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road)

A section of Massaponax Church Road remains closed. Message boards are posted along the detour route on Massaponax Church Road, Route 1 and Route 17.  A county capital project is underway to improve Massaponax Church Road near Route 17 (Mills Drive). Crews are working to improve the roadway alignment by removing two sharp, blind curves and adding shoulders. Drainage improvements will also be made.

Route 639 (Bragg Road)

(New) Thursday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 4 a.m. The left turn lane on Bragg Road to westbound Route 3 (Plank Road) will be blocked to allow a crew to remove a section of the median to even up the median to the new stop bar at the intersection.

Routine Maintenance

Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

  • Route 608 (Robert E. Lee Drive) ˗˗ pothole patching

Caroline County

Town of Bowling Green Sidewalk Project

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 6 p.m. A concrete sidewalk repair project is underway on Main Street in the Town of Bowling Green through August 21. Pedestrians can expect to see work on both sides of Main Street between East Broaddus Avenue and Milford Street. They will always have access to a sidewalk along one side of Main Street.

Route 360

(New) Wednesday ˗˗ Thursday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. A single, eastbound lane on Route 360 will be blocked near Route 619 (Kino Road) to allow crews to repair guardrail. Expect brief delays.

Route 17 near the Downing Bridge

Tuesday, 9 a.m. ˗˗2 p.m. Motorists should be alert for a mobile work zone with crews and construction equipment at various locations along Route 17 between Queen Street and Richmond Beach Road. Crews will make repairs to the handicapped accessible sidewalk ramps and pedestrian crossings in the town of Tappahannock. There may be temporary, intermittent lane closures with this work.

 

King George County

Route 301 (James Madison Parkway) near Commerce Drive (Gate B at Dahlgren)

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 3:30 p.m. A single right lane on northbound Route 301 (James Madison Parkway) will be blocked near Commerce Drive and Potomac Drive to allow crews to begin construction on extending the existing right lane from northbound Route 301 to the Gate B entrance to Naval Support Activity South Potomac at Dahlgren. Lengthening the turn lane adds more storage space for vehicles turning right and reduces congestion in the Route 301 through traffic lanes near the base.

Route 301 (James Madison Parkway) at Luke Street

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Wednesday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. A single, right southbound lane on James Madison Parkway near Luke Street will be blocked to allow crews to repair guardrail near the intersection.

Route 218 (Caledon Road)

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Wednesday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Caledon Road near the Vertical Ridge Road intersection to allow crews to repair guardrail. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Route 600 (Passapatanzy Drive)

(New) Monday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Passapatanzy Drive near Caledon Road to the King George County line to allow crews to restripe existing line markings.

Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.

Route 625 (Salem Church Road)

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 5:30 p.m. Motorists can expect one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on a portion of Route 625 (Salem Church Road), east of Route 650 (Welcome Lane). Crews are working to realign, widen and improve drainage along Salem Church Road.

Secondary Route Paving

(Update) Tuesday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations or a pilot vehicle on various low volume secondary routes throughout King George County for a paving operation. Routes to be surfaced treated over the week include: 603, 645, 647 and 676.

 

King William County

Route 30 at Eltham Bridge

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 5 p.m. Motorists should expect a single, right westbound lane on Route 30 (14th Street) blocked near the Lord Eltham Bridge over the Pawmunky River on the West Point side of the bridge for maintenance work. Expect brief delays.

 

Lancaster County/Middlesex County

Robert. O. Norris Bridge

Temporary traffic signals are in full operation mode at the center spans of the Norris Bridge on Route 3 between Lancaster and Middlesex counties. Two temporary traffic signals control one-way, alternating traffic at the bridge’s center spans 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Crews are using the closed lane to paint the center spans of the bridge over the Rappahannock River. The signals will remain in place until the end of the painting project in June 2018.

 

Lancaster County

Route 200 (Irvington Road)

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Thursday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane traffic on Route 200 (Irvington Road) between Carters Creek Bridge and King Carter Drive for a paving operation.  Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

 

Northumberland County

Route 360 at Academic Lane

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 6 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures and flagging operations at the intersection of Route 360 (Northumberland Highway) and Academic Lane as work continues to improve and widen the intersection.

 

Richmond County

Route 360 near Downing Bridge

(New) Wednesday ˗˗ Thursday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 3 p.m. Route 360 will be reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic just north of the Downing Bridge over the Rappahannock River to allow crews to repair guardrail. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Motorists should anticipate delays leading up to the work zone and may experience congestion on the bridge.

Route 3 (Historyland Highway)

Wednesday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route 3 (Historyland Highway) near Route 360 (Richmond Road) and Richmond Hill Road for a milling and paving operation.

 

Westmoreland County

Route 3

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Wednesday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane traffic on Route 3 near Parker’s Market to allow crews to repair guardrail near the intersection. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Secondary Route Paving

(Update) Monday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations or a pilot vehicle on various low volume secondary routes throughout Westmoreland County, as crews continue a paving and a surface treatment project. Routes to be surface treated include 1309 and 1325.

 

Highway Improvement Projects

City of Fredericksburg

Interstate 95 at Route 3 (Exit 130)

Construction is underway to improve safety on Interstate 95 and Route 3 at the Exit 130 interchange in the city of Fredericksburg. The project will modify the interchange ramps and lower crash risk by eliminating conflict points where vehicles currently merge and weave. Motorists should be prepared for lane closures, construction activity, and temporary traffic shifts on Route 3 and I-95 at Exit 130 through January 2019, when the project is expected to be complete.

Route 1 Bridge Rehabilitation Project at Hazel Run

Work to improve the Route 1 bridge over Hazel Run in the city of Fredericksburg is underway. The bridge is located on Route 1 between Idlewood Boulevard and Kings Mill Drive. Motorists should be alert to construction equipment and crews working along the shoulder until early spring. All travel lanes will be open in the work zone. The bridge rehabilitation project is expected to be complete in May 2017.

 

Stafford County

I-95 Express Lanes Southern Terminus Extension

Construction is underway to extend 95 Express Lanes in Stafford County. The approximate 2.5 mile extension will carry traffic beyond the flyover ramp where 95 Express Lanes currently end, just north of Exit 143/Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). The new southbound exit ramp is scheduled to open by early 2018, and the northbound entrance ramp will open in summer 2018.

I-95/Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Widening and Interchange Relocation

Preliminary geotechnical work is underway on a project to improve the I-95 interchange at Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road). The project includes building a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 140, relocating the Courthouse Rd. and Rt. 1 intersection to the south to align with Hospital Center Boulevard, widen Courthouse Rd. to four lanes, and add a traffic signal at the entrance to Colonial Forge High School. Construction to widen Courthouse Road will begin in summer 2017, and the entire project is expected to be complete by summer 2020.

Route 610 Widening Project

Stafford County is widening Route 610 from four to six lanes between Onville Road and Eustace Road. Utility relocation is underway.

 

Spotsylvania County

Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) Interstate 95 Overpass Replacement and Road Improvements

The project to build a new I-95 overpass on Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road), provide improvements to interstate ramps, Mudd Tavern Road east of I-95 and Mallard Road is underway. Motorists should be alert to construction crews and equipment on I-95 between mile marker 119 and Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg), Mudd Tavern Road, and Mallard Road. Construction for the $22.4 million project is expected to be complete by September 2019.

Route 1 and Route 620 (Harrison Road)

Construction to build additional turn lanes and extend existing turn lanes is underway at the intersection of Route 1 and Harrison Road. Motorists should be alert for construction crews and equipment. Project completion is May 2018.

Route 1 and Route 632 (Hickory Ridge Road)

Construction is underway at the intersection of Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) and Route 632 (Hickory Ridge Road) to improve traffic flow by adding and extending turn lanes. Motorists should be alert to crews working along the shoulders at the intersection. Project completion is July 11, 2017.

Route 647 (Blaydes Corner Road)  Bridge

Crews are rehabilitating a bridge on Blaydes Corner Road near Marye Road. Blaydes Corner Road closed on July 10 to allow crews to install new steel bridge beams, a timber deck. They will also be making repairs to the bridge’s substructure. After the bridge reopens, new guardrail will be installed. The project is expected to take four weeks.

Route 653 (Jones Powell Road) OPEN

A project to flatten a rise on Route 653 (Jones Powell Road) is complete. Jones Powell Road is now open to through traffic. All detour signs and barricades have been removed. Crews leveled Jones Powell Road to reduce a vertical curve to improve sight distance for motorists.

The $125,000 revenue-sharing project was jointly funded by Spotsylvania County and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

 

Caroline County

Route 17 and Route 301 Intersection

Crews are upgrading the existing signal equipment at the intersection of Route 17 (Tidewater Trail) and Route 301 (A.P. Hill Boulevard).  The modernized signal equipment will be fastened to mast arms from signal poles and will be aligned properly with the travel lanes. Most construction work will occur outside of travel lanes until spring 2017. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2017.

Route 662 (Gregory Road) Bridge Replacement

Crews will begin replacing the structurally deficient bridge over Reedy Creek on Gregory Road. A detour will be in place for approximately six weeks while construction is underway. Crews will replace the existing steel beams, deck and guardrail with a 40-foot long concrete slab bridge on new concrete abutments. The length of the two-lane bridge will almost be doubled following this project. New bridge delineators will also be installed. Bridge delineators are small traffic signs to provide night reflection and help guide traffic along the new bridge. Following final inspection of the bridge, the current weight limit posting is expected to be removed.

 

Caroline County/King George County

Route 301 at Rappahannock River

Bridge rehabilitation is underway on the James Madison Memorial Bridge over the Rappahannock River. Maintenance will occur below the bridge deck and includes repairing concrete, replacing bearings, shoring up rip-rap on the slope, and replacing navigation lights. All lanes are currently open on the bridge, but single lane closures will be in place periodically. Project completion is October 2017.

 

Gloucester County

Route 662 (Allmondsville Road) Bridge Replacement

Crews are replacing a structurally deficient bridge on Allmondsville Road over Fox Creek. The road is closed to through traffic at the bridge during construction. Motorists should follow the posted signs along the detour route. The project will be completed in April 2018.

 

Northumberland County

Route 360 (Northumberland Highway)

Construction is underway to extend the existing left turn lane and construct an additional left turn lane on Route 360 (Northumberland Highway) at Academic Lane.  Motorists can expect periodic lane closures on Route 360 throughout the day, Monday through Friday.  The Route 360 and Academic Lane intersection is located near the Northumberland County high school, middle school and elementary school campus.  The project will enhance safety at the intersection that serves the campus and improve roadway drainage in the area.  Work is expected to be complete in October 2017.
