Route 642 (Baynesville Road) in Westmoreland County has re-opened to traffic after a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bridge crew completed the installation of a new concrete bridge over the Big Swamp.
The bridge is located between Route 3 (Kings Highway) and Route 691(Northernmost Road).
VDOT closed Baynesville Road in mid-September to install a new 46-foot long concrete slab bridge on new concrete abutments, which more than doubled the length of the previous structure.
New bridge delineators were also installed. Bridge delineators are small traffic signs to provide night reflection and help guide traffic along the new bridge.

Built in 1970, the prior bridge was 22-feet long and structurally deficient. The previous structure had a weight limit posting of 20 tons for single-unit vehicles and 29 tons for tractor-trailers.

All weight posting signs have been removed following final inspection of the new bridge this morning.
Baynesville Road carries an average of 190 vehicles a day, according to a 2016 VDOT traffic count.
