From Friends of the Rappahannock

Friends of the Rappahannock recently purchased the 5 acres of land upriver from their headquarters from local businessman Doug Stewart. Thanks to Mr. Stewart’s generosity, the site affectionately know as the beach has been used as an outdoor classroom by FOR since he purchased it in 2005. The purchase was made possible by a gift from the Charles Rowe Family Foundation, established by Charles S. Rowe, who was a lifelong resident of Fredericksburg and editor and co-publisher of the Free Lance-Star.

“The beach is the best place for us to allow students to safely enter the water to perform chemical testing and collection of macro macro-invertebrates for biological testing,” said Kathleen Harrigan, executive director of FOR. “It has been used for school groups, summer camps and scout camping.”
