With flurries in the forecast, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is ready to respond with staffing, equipment and materials when snow starts to fall.

Motorists are advised to be prepared for the possibility of winter weather conditions, especially during the Friday evening commute by monitoring weather and traffic conditions.

Before hitting the road, check www.511virginia.org or the 511 mobile app for real-time road conditions in any area of the state.

Drivers can stay safe by making sure they have enough gas to reach their destination, slow down if snow starts to fall, and be aware of slick spots such as bridges, overpasses and shaded areas when temperatures begin to fall.

Based on the most recent forecast, Fredericksburg District crews are not planning on pre-treating the interstate or primary roads due to the warmer pavement temperatures and the high possibility of rain before snow.

The Fredericksburg District does not typically pre-treat roads when rain is anticipated to precede inclement weather, as any anti-icing solution would only wash away.

Crews will continue to monitor conditions and mobilize if necessary to spread sand, salt and treatment chemicals as needed to improve motorist traction. Crews will work 12-hour shifts, 24-hours a day, until all roads are safe for travel.

Plowing begins once snow accumulation on the road surface reaches two inches or more.

Commuters should be vigilant and monitor the forecasts closely for changes.
VDOT prepares for winter weather year-round and is ready to go, whether there’s snow or no snow.
