History camp registration opens

Spotsylvania County is now accepting registrations for the 2018 Kids’ History Camp. This hands-on day camp will be held Friday, April 6, 2018, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Shannon Airport and is open to children ages 7-14. Participants will learn what it was like to live during the Civil War. This year’s event includes aviation history at Shannon Air Museum and a tour of nearby Slaughter Pen Farm.

Campers will be divided into groups based on age or special requests. They will visit various learning stations throughout the day. Topics include life in the military, including aviation history; what home life was like for families; slavery; the Underground Railroad; Spotsylvania Fire and Rescue and much more.

Leaders of the various learning stations are local reenactment groups: Co I, 47th Virginia – The Stafford Guards; Women of the American Civil War; and other local historians. A special tour of the Slaughter Pen Farm will be led by a historian from Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (NPS). A lunch of a hot dog, chips and bottle of water will be provided, but campers can also bring their own lunches and snacks.

Cost: $45 per child
(Registration is required and is limited to the first 100 children)
