Mental Health America of Fredericksburg (MHAF) challenges the greater Fredericksburg area to collectively walk one million steps at the 11th annual Walk for Mental Wellness on May 5th, 2018. The walk will be held at a new location, Maury Park, at the corner of William Street and Kenmore Avenue in Downtown Fredericksburg.

MHAF hosts the Walk for Mental Wellness to help support its free services that provide mental health resources to help educate and aid people in Fredericksburg and the surrounding counties. The Rappahannock Area Gentleman’s & Fair Ladies’ Riding Club is this year’s lead sponsor.

“I’m walking and raising money because Mental Health America of Fredericksburg is working to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues,” says Rita Girard, executive director for MHAF. “What I have come to know is that everyone has ‘stuff.’ I believe it is only when we admit that we have ‘stuff’ and seek help that we can become emotionally healthy. Reducing the stigma helps make it easier for all of us to admit we have ‘stuff’ and get the help we need.”

The Walk for Mental Wellness is a family and canine-friendly event that has fun activities for all ages including one and three mile walk routes, raffles, a silent auction, live music, games and children’s activities. Team participation is encouraged to promote and spread mental health awareness through spirit and collaboration.

The silent auction and raffle drawings will take place after the walks. Gift certificates, gift baskets, furniture, vacations and other high-ticket items will be auctioned or raffled.

Individuals and teams may now register online by visiting www.mhafred.org/walk. Registration costs $25 per person and will go toward MHAF’s fundraising goal. Walkers are also encouraged to use MHAF’s free online crowdfunding tool to help support its mission.

Check-in and day-of registration begins at 9 a.m. rain or shine. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, along with sunglasses and a hat or other sun protection. Free t-shirts are guaranteed if registered by April 20th. For more information and the latest updates visit www.mhafred.org/walk.

Mental Health America of Fredericksburg has been serving the greater Fredericksburg community since 1955. The Walk for Mental Wellness supports its services, including the HelpLine, the Suicide Prevention Education program, the Senior Visitors program and support groups.
