Route 1 Paving Project to Begin in Spotsylvania County

Drivers are asked to be alert for overnight lane closures this spring on Route 1 in Spotsylvania County as crews begin to mill and pave multiple sections of this primary road between the City of Fredericksburg and the Spotsylvania Parkway area.

Work begins on Sunday, April 22. The first section of Route 1 to be paved during 2018 will be from just south of the Southpoint Parkway intersection to just south of the Spotsylvania Parkway intersection.

Weather permitting, drivers can expect single lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound between Southpoint Parkway and the Spotsylvania Parkway area at the following dates and times next week:

Sunday, April 22 – Thursday, April 26

  • 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Next week, crews will begin by milling the existing pavement. Drivers may encounter brief delays, rough pavement, and temporary pavement markings. Warning signs will be posted to alert motorists to rough pavement ahead.

Travelers are encouraged to avoid distractions and give the work zone their full attention. Virginia State Police will be present to assist crews with traffic control.

Coming Up – More Route 1, Spotsylvania Parkway Paving

Once paving is finished on Route 1 between Southpoint Parkway and the Spotsylvania Parkway area, crews will shift to additional paving projects in the area.

Route 1 will be paved in 2018 from the City of Fredericksburg line to just north of Harrison Road. Paving will resume on

Route 1 just south of Harrison Road and continue to Market Street. The Route 1 and Harrison Road intersection was paved in 2017 as part of the Harrison Road intersection improvement project.

Also during 2018, Spotsylvania Parkway will be paved between Route 1 and Leavells Road.

Dates for paving work in these areas will be announced as it is scheduled.
