Traffic Stop on Route 17 Leads to Drug Arrests

Deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office arrested two suspects on Monday after a traffic stop on U.S. 17 led to the discovery of drugs in the suspect vehicle. On May 14, 2018, at approximately 2:33 p.m., 1st Sgt. Brandon Morris initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle with a defective brake light on U.S. 17 turning into the Days Inn on Simpson Lane.

The driver was identified as Joseph Brian Meade, 28, of Spotsylvania and the passenger was identified as Chelsie Renee Smith, 28, of Stafford. After approaching the vehicle, the deputy detected the smell of marijuana. A search of the vehicle revealed drugs, including heroin, and drug paraphernalia.

Both suspects were incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on secured bonds. They were each charged with possession of controlled substances, possession of marijuana, and possession of controlled paraphernalia.
