Route 608 (Benchmark Road) in Spotsylvania County has re-opened to through traffic between Route 17 and Mine Road.

Crews finished an emergency road repair and culvert installation project on Benchmark Road at Massaponax Creek. Crews installed three new concrete culverts underneath the road and restored the travel surface.

Message boards posted on surrounding roads will remain in place for several days to notify drivers that Benchmark Road is open to through traffic.

Benchmark Road was closed on Feb. 12, 2018 after heavy rain caused the roadway over three drainage pipes to fail. The rainwater opened up a hole along the pavement edge measuring 5 feet wide, 14 feet long, and 8 feet deep. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) used emergency procurement methods to fabricate three culverts at OldCastle Precast Concrete in Spotsylvania. Each culvert measures 10 feet high and 12 feet wide.

Contractor W.C. Spratt installed the new culverts and completed the emergency repair by the scheduled June 5 re-opening date.

An average of 5,100 vehicles travels Benchmark Road between Route 17 and Mine Road daily, according to a 2016 traffic count.
