A suspect who was taken into custody on Sunday for assault and public intoxication subsequently attempted to assault a deputy with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and a nurse attempting to provide him with medical treatment.

On September 16, 2018, at approximately 7:33 p.m., Deputy Scott Fulford responded to a reported assault at a residence on the 200 block of White Oak Road. The victim told the deputy that he and the suspect became involved in a physical altercation. At one point, the suspect attempted to assault the victim’s mother, prompting the victim to break a glass over his head. A witness corroborated the victim’s story.

The suspect was identified as Michael Lee Shoemaker, 24, of Fredericksburg. When Deputy Fulford finished speaking with the victim, he observed Sergeant Rakoczy speaking with Shoemaker. The suspect had lacerations on the back of his head. He was also unsteady on his
feet and his speech was slurred.

Rakoczy informed Fulford that the suspect had threatened him and was acting belligerent. Shoemaker was then taken into custody and transported to Stafford Hospital to receive medical treatment. While at the hospital, he attempted to kick and bite Deputy Fulford when the deputy attempted to prevent him from moving his handcuffs to the front of his body. Then, when a nurse attempted to administer medical treatment, the suspect tried to bite her.

Shoemaker will be transported to Rappahannock Regional Jail upon release from the hospital. He is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, simple assault, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication.
