Got yourself a new iPhone device and want to transfer your data from your old device? It is a simple process and it just takes a few minutes. Whether you have a fresh out of the box iPhone device or a certified pre-owned iPhone device, the following steps will be the same (for iOS 11.3.1® operating system and newer).

Create a backup of your old device

Before making the switch to your new device, you need to create a backup of your old one. Here are two simple ways to do so.

iCloud® Service

  • Grab your old device and tap on Settings. Once there, open your account and go to iCloud service and then iCloud Backup.
  • Here, you can turn on iCloud Backup.
  • You will be prompted by a message asking if you wish to start the iCloud Backup.

iTunes® Service via a Mac® computer

  • Use the data cable to connect your old iPhone device to your Mac computer.
  • Open the iTunes app on your Mac computer and select the iPhone icon.
  • A page will appear on your screen with a summary regarding your iPhone device. In the Manually Backup and Restore section, click on “Back Up Now”.
  • To check if the backup was done, you can go to your iTunes account, select Preferences and then Devices. Look for the device name, time and date of the last backup. If the name, date and time match when the backup was done, then you’re good.

Backup the new iOS device

Now that your data is all backed up, it is time to turn on the new device. If your new phone contains data that you or someone else might want to keep you might want to back it up just as we did above.

Wipe your new iPhone device

When you have finished backing up the data from your new iPhone device or just don’t need anything on it, you can just wipe the device.

  • Go to Settings, tap on your account name and select iCloud. Here, you will see Find My iPhone/iPad, turn this feature off.
  • When that is done, go to Settings, General and then Reset. Enter the password if needed and wait until it is done.

Restore your data to the new iOS device

Before proceeding, insert your SIM card into your new iOS device.

iTunes Restore

  • Power on the device and follow the initial setup until you get to the Apps & Data screen. Select “Restore from iTunes Backup”.
  • Connect your device via the USB cable to the Mac computer.
  • Select Restore Backup and select the backup you did earlier.
  • You will be prompted on the screen, follow those steps.

iCloud Restore

  • Power on the device and follow the initial setup until you get to the Apps & Data screen. Select “Restore from iCloud backup”.
  • Use your credentials to log into the iCloud account where the Backup was created.
  • Select the Backup you did earlier.
  • You will be prompted on the screen, follow those steps.
