Volunteers Needed: Special Olympics Virginia’s Basketball Championships

by | Feb 22, 2019 | Non-Profits

The madness is starting early this year! Nearly 800 Special Olympics Virginia athletes will run, jump and shoot for gold at the annual Special Olympics Virginia Basketball Championships, a fun, family-friendly way to score two for respect and spread unity. And we need your help!

Step off the sidelines and onto the court as a volunteer at Basketball Championships, March 1-2 in Stafford. Competitions will take place at various middle and high schools and include full court games, half court games, individual skill drills, and unified games, where players with and without disabilities play on the same team. Ten of the teams competing, as well as 12 athletes who will compete in individual skills drills, are local to the Stafford/Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg area.

Volunteers are needed to help with everything from keeping score to distributing lunches, announcing games and presenting awards Friday from 3-10 pm and Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm (various shifts available at Colonial Forge High School [550 Courthouse Road], Dixon Smith Middle School [503 Deacon Road], H.H. Poole Middle [800 Eustace Road], Stafford Middle School [101 Spartan Lane], Thompson Middle School [75 Walpole Street], A. G. Wright Middle School [100 Wood Drive], North Stafford High School [839 Garrisonville Road], Mountain View High School [2135 Mountain View Road] and Gayle Middle School [100 Panther Drive] – currently a waitlist at this location).

Sign up to volunteer today at http://cerv.is/m?0218c88. Volunteers with medical training also are needed; to sign up as a medical volunteer visit http://cerv.is/m?0218c81. Your support will help unite more than 300,000 champions with and without disabilities in more than 460 K-12 schools, and thousands more in community-based programs across Virginia.

Basketball Championships, presented by GEICO with additional support from Walmart, is one of many events offered year-round by Special Olympics Virginia. In addition to Saturday’s action, GEICO also helps organize and star in Friday’s All-Star Friday Night Opening Ceremony at Colonial Forge High School. The Ceremony begins at 7:45 pm and features a Unified basketball game, half-time games and the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron. Fans are welcome!
