by | May 15, 2019 | Sports

Construction has begun! W.C. Spratt is busy at Dixon Park moving earth to build Fredericksburg’s new outdoor roller hockey rink. This is a  joint project between the City of Fredericksburg and the Capitals.    The team will  provide training for the city school system’s teachers, along with lesson plans and equipment for students.

The rink is part of the Capitals’ Legacy Project to expand the love of hockey by building or refurbishing 20 rinks in the Washington metro area by 2020. The program began a decade ago with the goal of reaching about 1.2 million students at as many as 1,300 mostly elementary and middle schools.

In Fredericksburg, the team plans to spend about $100,000 to have a playing surface installed next to the Dixon Park Pool as well as to buy the goals, dasher boards, a score board, benches and fencing. It will display its primary and community logos on the rink’s surface, two dasher boards and the scoreboard.  The city will be responsible for preparing the site.
