City Council hears how slave auction block will be moved

by | Jul 10, 2019 | History

Fredericksburg City Council begins discussion of moving the slave auction block from the corner of William and Charles Streets to the Fredericksburg Area Museum.

Public Works Director Dave King described how the move will take place. No discussion of when it will occur. King says his department has the equipment and expertise to make the the move. He says a study found the block is not as deep into the ground as originally thought.

King says Public Works will have Dovetail Cultural Resource Group on site when the move is made to ensure the block is safe and protected. He says it will all be done in a respectful and dignified way.

Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw says the block will go to the Fredericksburg Area Museum as a loan, not a gift.
