Are you scared to delete an album in your Mac® computer’s Photos app? Here’s what you need to know.

Our photos are one of those few items we will have to forever remember a moment in time and the thought of losing photos we treasure can be truly worrisome. If the notion of losing albums in your Mac computer’s Photos app causes you to feel anxious, here is what you need to know.

Albums show you the same photos that are in your camera roll but they are simply grouped for easier access. The albums can be thought of like a plastic bin holding all of your memories in one place. The album is not what makes the media; the media is what makes the media.

Deleting an album does not delete the photos from the Photos app. It deletes the “container” (or album) that has held the media in a bundle. However, if you delete a photo from an album, it will be removed from other albums and deleted from the library and the Camera Roll.

So, if you delete an entire album and not the photos, the photos are protected. To delete an album without deleting the photos, select the album in the Album list and tap the red delete button.

If you want to delete photos and videos from your library, they can be deleted one at a time or multiple photos at once:

  • Delete one photo
    • Select the photo to delete
    • Press the delete key
    • Confirm that you want to delete
  • Delete multiple photos
    • Press and hold the Command key
    • Select the photos to delete
    • Press the delete key
    • Confirm the deletion

One last tip – Once a photo is deleted, it will go into the Recently Deleted album. The photo(s) will stay there for 30 days. After 30 days, the Photos app permanently deletes photos. However, you can delete the photos permanently before the 30 days by selecting “Delete All in the Recently Deleted Album.”
