City Police speak out on domestic violence and breast cancer

by | Oct 2, 2019 | Police and Fire

From Fredericksburg Police:

For the past three years, the Fredericksburg Police Department has covered a patrol car to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This October, in addition to raising awareness for breast cancer, the Department is also showing support for Domestic Violence Month. All month, a pink-and-purple cruiser will patrol the City of Fredericksburg with the seal “Together we battle against Breast Cancer & Domestic Violence.” Several officers will also don a pink police badge on their uniform.

“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. And one in four women aged 18 and older in our country have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. These statistics are alarming.” said Police Chief David Nye. “I am proud of the women and men in my Department who are committed to showing their support to everyone affected by domestic violence and breast cancer.”

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, nearly half of all women and men in the United States have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime. The Department is releasing a public service announcement video emphasizing their commitment to victims of domestic violence by encouraging them to seek help from local law enforcement.  The Fredericksburg Police Department hopes their efforts will empower victims of domestic violence to end the cycle of abuse.

The Fredericksburg Police Department would like to thank Mary Washington Healthcare for sponsoring our efforts this month.
