City Police asking public assistance in solving cold case

by | Dec 9, 2019 | Police and Fire

From Fredericksburg City Police:

On December 9th, 1994, Geraldine Ross was found murdered inside her apartment located in the 1600 block of Forrest Village Drive in Fredericksburg.  Geraldine, a single mom with an eight-year-old son, Jonathan, dropped him off for school earlier that morning.  When she failed to pick him up after school, he walked home to their apartment and found the door was locked.  After waiting in the cold for several hours, a maintenance worker noticed Jonathan and asked why he was outside in the cold.  After letting him in, Jonathan discovered his mother lying on their bedroom floor unresponsive.  Geraldine had actually been dead for some time.

Police investigation determined that Geraldine had been both stabbed and strangled.  There was no forced entry into the apartment, possibly indicating that she may have known her attacker.  This was a particularly gruesome and devastating event for her son Jonathan, his family, and the entire community.  The Fredericksburg Police Department, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, continues to work this case, and are committed to utilizing the full resources that law enforcement can provide to resolve this case.

On this 25th anniversary of Geraldine’s death, we are asking anyone who has any information about the death of Geraldine Ross contact the Fredericksburg Police Department at (540) 373-3122 and provide whatever information they may have.  We know that there are persons who knew Geraldine that have information that can help police determine what happened that day.  To make an anonymous tip, send a text to “847- 411” and text “FPDtip” followed by your information. Or, download the free FPD Tip app available for Android and iPhones. To download the app, search “FPD Tip” in the Google or iTunes App Store.

The Department is in the process of resubmitting evidence for examination utilizing more modern techniques that were not available at the time.  We will also be re-interviewing persons already questioned about Geraldine, as well as some new names that we recently uncovered.  We ask that if you have any additional information, even if you believe that this information is already known to law enforcement, that you contact us.  Even if you wish to remain anonymous, your information will help us make sure we have the most accurate account of what happened that day 25 years ago, and bring closure for Jonathan and his family.
