The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office has released more details on an officer involved shooting on Thursday night.  Deputies with the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit were conducting a prostitution sting at a local hotel off of Jefferson Davis Hwy. During the operation a male contacted the female and requested sexual services.  The male arrived at the arranged location which was a local hotel.  When deputies entered the room, they gave commands to the male to show his hands.  During the arrest the male reached for a gun in his waistband. Deputies again gave verbal commands for the male to show his hands at which point he did not comply. The deputy discharged his firearm, striking the male in the upper torso.  The male was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and is currently listed in critical condition.  The male is 37 years old from Spotsylvania County. The name of the hotel, the male nor the deputy will be released at this time.  Detectives spent several hours collecting evidence, witness statements and body camera footage.

Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, to include the Office’s Critical Incident Response Team is currently investigating the shooting and a separate Internal Affairs Investigation is also being conducted.  The deputy involved, who is a 19-year veteran with this office was placed on Administrative Leave per Sheriff’s Office policy.  We are still in the early stages of the investigation.  The Sheriff’s Office extends their prayers to all involved in the incident.
