Study finds less traffic, more exercise in pandemic times

by | May 14, 2020 | Outdoors

The Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization conducted a survey that found a significant increase in running, walking and biking in the region and a significant decrease in personal vehicle use because of the public health guidelines in place because of COVID-19.

Comments reflect a common concern for pedestrian safety– specifically the ability to properly social distance on sidewalks and trails. There is wide support to temporarily repurpose street space for pedestrians and cyclists and for automating cross walks.    Additionally, responses on the topic of public transit show that even after social distancing measures are eased, a majority of survey participants will be apprehensive about using the bus or train. However, comments do mention the importance of having FRED bus service restored for those who use it as their main source of transportation.

The survey took place late April to May 12. A total of 179 responses were received. 137 gave fully complete responses.
