Caroline County teacher receives free “Thank-You” vacation

by | Jun 14, 2020 | Government

From The Virginia Lottery:

Thousands of Virginia educators received a digital thank-you note in the Virginia Lottery’s Thank a Teacher campaign. One lucky Virginia teacher received that and a lot more! Elizabeth Flaherty, fourth grade teacher at Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Caroline County, won a Virginia-themed vacation courtesy of the Lottery and $5,000 in credit to the Supply Room for her school.

Flaherty’s name was drawn from nearly 3,000 entries submitted by teachers who entered a special code from their thank-you notes in the prize drawing. Virginia Lottery officials surprised Flaherty with the good news via Zoom. The video chat included an additional surprise with an appearance by First Lady of Virginia Pamela Northam, who thanked Flaherty and surprised her with a special fieldtrip for her class to the Executive Mansion once school resumes in the fall.

The award-winning Thank a Teacher campaign was held in conjunction with National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 8 – 10). During that week, thousands of digital thank-you notes were sent to Virginia K-12 public school teachers by their students, parents or other Virginians. The cards each had one of three pieces of artwork designed by Virginia elementary, middle and high school students in the Thank a Teacher Art Contest.

When teachers received the thank-you notes, they could use a unique web code on the note to enter for a chance to win the grand prize.

The Thank a Teacher campaign is a partnership between the Virginia Lottery, the Supply Room, and the Virginia PTA. It’s an initiative to celebrate those teachers whose hard work and inspiration have made a difference in so many lives.

The Virginia Lottery is good fun for a great cause. Caroline County received more than $2.6 million in Lottery funds for K-12 public education last fiscal year.
