Cleaning up a historical site downtown that many us didn’t know was historic

by | Jun 27, 2020 | History

From the Fredericksburg Canal Quarter Facebook post:

Leaders for Peace organized a cleanup of 1517 Caroline Street in the Fredericksburg Canal Quarter this week. This location was the end point of the Underground Railroad, where freed slaves would cross the river into Union territory. The location, on city property, had since fallen into a state of neglect. Leaders for Peace spent the afternoon clearing out mountains of dead bamboo, and even cleared and cleaned a blocked stream. They hope to turn the location into a park, with a plaque detailing the location’s history. The riverside bamboo grove is a hidden gem of the Canal Quarter and Fredericksburg as a whole. If you have time, we recommend stoping by to enjoy their hard work.
