Spotsy K-9 Kara has a special name and significance

by | Sep 28, 2020 | Police and Fire

From the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office:

Sheriff Harris is honored to announce that K-9 Kara had the opportunity to meet her namesake, Kara Chamberlain!!  In June of 2002, when Kara was 15 years old, she was kidnapped from her friend’s front yard by a man she didn’t know. A serial killer who would have made her another one of his victims.
While he was sleeping, she escaped her captor’s restraints and went to law enforcement to tell them her story. She would later find out that the man had murdered at least three girls before her. Those three girls were from Spotsylvania County–Sofia Silva and sisters Kristin and Kati Lisk.
Kara survived to spread hope and encouragement to other survivors. To remind them that they are not alone and that they are stronger than what had happened to them.
We are who we are because of what happened but we are not defined by it. She uses her traumatic experience as well as her years of work in law enforcement to speak to groups around the country. She tells her story, to help educate those who work with victims, and empower individuals to be the best version of themselves they can be, regardless of their past.
K-9 Kara is one of the seven from the Spotsylvania County’s K-9 Team. She is trained in Tracking/Patrol Duties/Narcotics and is named to honor the memories of Sofia, Kristin and Kati.
