From Friends of The Rappahannock

Fredericksburg, VA – Oysters grown in the Rappahannock River are coming to Fredericksburg. Friends of the Rappahannock is offering a curbside pick up oyster package and virtual tasting experience on December 12.

This oyster experience is crafted for both oyster-lovers and anyone who wants to learn how to enjoy oysters. The oyster package includes raw oysters, a shucking knife, oyster toppings, recipe cards and access to a virtual tasting experience. Packages must be ordered in advance. The virtual discussion will include an oyster shucking demonstration and feature discussions from oyster farmers at Rogue Oysters and Friends of the Rappahannock staff about oysters in the Rappahannock River.

Oysters naturally filter water and help improve overall water quality. Friends of the Rappahannock invests heavily in their oyster reef restoration program as a method to reduce pollution. In 2020, they worked with local partners and waterman to place over 11,000 bushels of oyster shell on new and restored oyster reefs in creeks in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

“Working with oyster growers and watermen is a powerful way we can support local businesses and improve the health of the Rappahannock River,” said Anne Self, Lower River Steward at Friends for the Rappahannock. “We’re excited to provide delicious oysters by Rogue Oysters, an oyster grower based out of Lancaster, VA. We have a great partnership with Rogue Oysters. We’ve supported their pop-up oyster sales in response to COVID restrictions and they have generously supported our oyster reef restoration program.”
Two oyster packages are available to purchase: a 25-count or 75-count of oysters. Proceeds from the oyster package sales directly support Friends of the Rappahannock’s mission to be the voice and active force for a healthy and scenic Rappahannock River.
Curbside pickup is available for oyster packages midday on December 12 and join a virtual discussion at 5 pm. The Fredericksburg pick up will be at the Friends of the Rappahannock headquarters office at 3219 Fall Hill Ave. There are also pick up locations available in Sperryville and Warrenton. The deadline to purchase an oyster package is December 10.
