Callers claiming to be with the Stafford Sheriff’s Office reported

by | Dec 28, 2020 | Police and Fire

From the Stafford Sheriff’s Office:

Over the holiday weekend, we received reports of callers claiming to be Captain Carey with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer attempted to get personal identification information from the resident. Another resident reported receiving a similar phone call. The scammer told the victim she was wanted and she needed to pay “pre-bail”. The resident realized it was a scam before sending money.
The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public:
– Deputies will NEVER call and demand payment over the phone.
– If you are unsure of who you are speaking with, ask the caller for their information, hang-up and call the specific agency in question. Do not give any of your information over the phone.
– Lastly, if someone asks you to make payment by providing gift card numbers or through wire transfers it is almost always a scam.
If you believe you’ve been a victim of a scam contact the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office at (540) 658-4400.
