The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging drivers to avoid travel today with heavy sleet causing treacherous travel conditions in the Fredericksburg, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula area.
Most roads, including Interstate 95, are in moderate condition, meaning major portions of the roadway are covered with sleet.
VDOT crews and contractors continue to make passes to remove the ice pellets from the travel lanes and apply abrasives on I-95, and other major routes.
With air temperatures forecasted to stay below freezing, VDOT anticipates travel conditions to remain hazardous today, Feb. 18, tonight and tomorrow, Feb. 19.
There’s potential for heavy ice accumulation on roadways, especially on secondary routes and subdivision streets.
There is no safe way to drive on ice, no matter what type of vehicle you own.
With this much ice, there is also a danger of trees, debris and power lines falling onto the roads. VDOT has dozens of tree crews staged across the Fredericksburg District to quickly respond to downed trees and remove them from the roadway.
Please consider if your outside steps, sidewalk or driveway is slick, most roads will be too.
The safest place during a storm is home.
VDOT crews need time and space to make roads safe for travel again. Please avoid unnecessary travel until road conditions improve and temperatures rise above freezing.
