2,300 free trees and shrubs in Fredericksburg to be given way next month

by | Feb 27, 2021 | Outdoors

From Tree Fredericksburg:

2,300 free one-gallon native trees and shrubs will be given away on Saturday, March 27th from 8 A.M. to Noon at the Fredericksburg Nationals Ball Park Stadium, 42 Jackie Robinson Way 22401. This native tree giveaway is made possible by financial contributions from Tree Fredericksburg, Bartlett Tree Research, We Plant Trees, Friends of the Rappahannock,  grants from National Fish & Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and Trees Virginia.

  • There is a limit of five trees and/or shrubs per family.
  • To give more people a chance to take home our beautiful state tree, we are limiting orders to one dogwood per family.
  • If you cannot pick up your trees yourself – you may send someone to pick up for you.  .
  • If you live in zip code 22401 you are now able to reserve your free trees starting today
  • All unclaimed trees will be available on 3/27 starting at 12:45 pm – first come basis

There will also be stakes available for purchase for $1 and free tree chain. We will have moisture meters for sale at the wholesale price – $5. Making sure trees have enough moisture but not too much is critical. More trees die from overwatering than underwatering. This is an important tool that all gardeners should have. You can reserve your moisture meter when you reserve your trees.

To ensure compliance with social distancing guidelines, this tree giveaway will use a “drive-thru” format. Recipients will be able to pick up their trees without leaving their vehicle. Masks are mandatory for all participants. All recipients must agree to plant and care for their tree as per prescribed standards and report that their tree has been planted.

Trees available while supplies lasts: Trees: White Dogwood, Red Maple, Black Gum, Serviceberry, River Birch, Redbud, Fringe Tree, American Persimmon, Witch Hazel, Sweet Bay Magnolia, Swamp White Oak, White Oak and Bald Cypress. Shrubs: Bayberry, Highbush Blueberry, Elderberry, Red-Osier Dogwood, Arrowwood Viburnum, and Winterberry.
