Route 17 in Caroline reopens

by | Mar 2, 2021 | Traffic

VDOT says Route 17 in Caroline County has reopened to through traffic between Route 615 (Ware Creek Road) and Route 719 (Mount Road). A temporary traffic signal is now active to direct one-way, alternating traffic through the site of an emergency repair work zone.

The road was closed on Feb. 9 for motorist safety after an adjacent slope and a drainage pipe underneath the road failed. The temporary traffic signal was able to be activated on Tuesday, one day earlier than the previously announced March 3 date.

While Route 17 has reopened, planning continues for repair work. The project timeline is still under development. Following site visits this week, VDOT and its contractors will have more information on how each phase of repair work can be coordinated and sequenced.

Before two lanes of traffic can be restored, crews will need to stabilize the slope, install a new drainage pipe, seal the previous drainage pipe, and restore the travel surface.
