Prince William Police with a scam warning

by | Mar 27, 2021 | Police and Fire

There is a scam circulating where police imposters are attempting to trick citizens into giving them money by asking for a donation to Cops and Kids for Drug Abuse. They offer to send someone to your house to pick up the donation or you can donate over the phone.
Most alarming is that caller ID may show the name and phone number from a police agency. This can happen when someone is spoofing the phone number to make it appear to be coming from a legitimate agency.
You or someone you know might have received phone calls from someone claiming to be the Police Department, Sheriff’s Department, DEA or even the FBI. When you get calls like this do not trust them. Always verify by calling the agency directly – look up the phone number independently, don’t call back any number they give you.
There is a growing trend nationwide of citizens receiving fraudulent phone calls from people claiming to be affiliated with law enforcement.
The Prince William County Police Department will never call asking for money. If you receive a call like this do not give them money and contact the police department at 703-792-6500.
