Three names chosen as potential new names for Robert E. Lee Elementary in Spotsylvania

The Spotsylvania County Public Schools “School Naming Committee” has selected the three finalists for suggested school names for Robert E. Lee Elementary School. The selections come after the committee received and considered 495 responses from a community survey conducted from
February 26, 2021 through March 19, 2021. Spotsylvania County students, parents, school personnel, and other community stakeholders are encouraged to select their preferred school name by completing the finalists polling survey on the school division website at www.spotsylvania.k12.va.us.

The deadline for making selections is Friday, April 9, 2021.

To access the survey, click on the link entitled Finalists Polling Survey for Renaming R.E. Elementary School. The instructions for completing the survey are provided. A hard copy version of the survey in English and Spanish may be obtained in Mr. Robert MacDonald’s (principal) office at Robert E. Lee
Elementary School or at the School Administrative Services Office (School Board Office) at 8020 River Stone Drive, Fredericksburg, VA 22407. Please contact Mr. MacDonald at 540.582.545 or [email protected] should you require another type of survey format or language to
make your selection.

All three finalists that are presented for the public’s consideration have satisfied the School Board’s criteria pursuant to Policy and Regulation FF – Naming School Facilities. Policy stipulates that school names may signify, but not be limited to, places or events of historical significance to Spotsylvania County or geographical areas within the County. Any proposed school name must reflect inclusivity, cultural diversity, and respect for all community constituents.

The three suggested finalists, in alphabetical order, from which you are to make your selection are:

1) Harmony Elementary School: This name embodies unification and is predicated philosophically on educational practices that focus on collaborative partnerships with the community, diversity, addressing the instructional needs of all students, and relationships that maximize opportunities to grow as ONE.

2) Spotsylvania Elementary School: This name reflects the historical significance of “Spotsylvania” as a county and its long standing traditional values of a unified community and the progressive growth for all. Spotsylvania embraces collaboration, diversity, and respect for its citizenry. Its commitment to education supports inclusive practices that maximizes the achievement of all students.

3) Unity Elementary School: This name embodies both the concepts of “togetherness” and “acceptance” without exception. In practice the “unified school” is a model of excellence that focuses on diversity, equity, multicultural education, and community engagement that strives to meet the instructional needs of all students. The School Naming Committee will submit its recommendation to the School Board at its regular meeting on May 10, 2021.
