Stafford County Public School’s (SCPS) Administrator of Health Services, Colette Hokana BSN, RN, NBCSN, has earned a prestigious Unsung Hero Award. Presented by the Fredericksburg Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, the award recognizes individuals for outstanding impact on education and health in the Rappahannock region.

“Colette continually exceeds our expectations and inspires others to do the same,” said SCPS Superintendent Dr. Scott Kizner. “She clearly demonstrates commitment, compassion, and loyalty to our learning community. She does everything with a positive, professional disposition that reassures students and staff during uncertain times, and we are grateful to have her on the SCPS staff.”

Hokana serves as the SCPS nurse manager. She regularly goes above and beyond her responsibilities to make sure that students and staff have the right resources and support to stay safe during these unprecedented times. Over the last twelve months, Hokana has spearheaded the division’s coronavirus response efforts, demonstrating an unparalleled devotion to staff and students.

In performance of her duties, Hokana provides non-stop training and support to nurses and staff as guidance changes from the local and state health departments. She clearly articulates the numerous changes to peers, supervisors, and families and serves as the subject matter expert at board meetings, town halls, and staff meetings. She works tirelessly to conduct contact tracing, develop guidance documents for the school division, and supports staff with other day-to-day tasks required of school nurses.

“This was totally unexpected, and a great honor to be recognized in this manner but what I do is a shared responsibility with all the nurses in the division, working together to ensure our kids have everything they need to stay safe,” said Hokana. “We just want our students to be successful.”

Hokana will be recognized during a virtual award recognition event during the Fredericksburg Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s (FAAC) May Week Spotlight Celebration on Sunday, May 16, at 2 p.m.
