Truck Parking expansion begins at I-95 Southbound rest area in Caroline

by | May 15, 2021 | Traffic

To meet growing demand for truck and oversize vehicle parking in the Interstate 95 corridor, an expansion project is starting this month at the I-95 Southbound Safety Rest Area at Ladysmith in Caroline County.

When construction is complete in May 2022, the number of available parking spaces for trucks and oversize vehicles will be doubled at the rest area, which is located at mile marker 107, south of I-95 exit 110 (Ladysmith).

Currently, there are 20 parking spaces for trucks and oversize vehicles at the rest area. Parking for these vehicle types will be increased to 45 spaces.

All rest area restrooms, amenities and existing parking will remain open to visitors during construction. In addition to the 20 truck parking spaces, the facility offers 55 parking spaces for cars and 4 handicapped-accessible parking spaces.

Beginning Monday, May 17, barrels will be installed along the shoulder of the interstate entrance and exit ramps at the rest area. Barrels will also be placed along the rear of the truck and oversize vehicle parking area. Motorists will not be able to access the shoulder in these areas during construction.

The I-95 Southbound Safety Rest Area at Ladysmith is among the busiest in Virginia, with an average of around 1.4 million visitors a year, which is around 4,000 people a day.

The $4.2 million parking expansion project is being funded through state maintenance funds.

The project contractor is Phillips Construction, LLC.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) operates 43 Safety Rest Areas across Virginia. Eleven of the 43 facilities are combined Safety Rest Areas and Welcome Centers.
