by | Sep 5, 2021 | Schools & Education

T. Benton Gayle Middle School’s Jeremy Utt, an 8th grade mathematics and geometry teacher, is the 2021 recipient of the Master Teacher of Honor Award from Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education (KDP). Utt joins a select group of remarkable educators who have been recognized with this honor since 2011.

“I am grateful to all of the people who have helped make receiving this award possible. I have been fortunate to work with some great administrators and colleagues who have helped me grow as a professional,” said Utt, a National Board Certified Teacher. “Also, I have had various opportunities throughout my career that have allowed me to become a better educator and to serve the profession in various ways. It is important to meet students where they are in terms of their academic development and help them grow their knowledge and skills. I believe all students can learn and achieve.”

Since the award’s establishment, KDP has named very few teachers with the Masters Teachers of Honor distinction. To earn this designation, an educator must among many things have more than 15 years of classroom teaching experience; submit evidence of professional development, leadership, community service, and exceptional contributions to the education profession; and demonstrate a commitment to integrity and high standards in the classroom.

“Our educators are some of the finest in Virginia, and they regularly demonstrate an unparalleled devotion to our students and community,” said SCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Stanley B. Jones. “Mr. Utt is a shining example of the division’s mission to inspire and empower our students to excel and we are thrilled to announce his recognition as a Master Teacher of Honor.”

A veteran educator of more than 15 years, Utt has primarily taught mathematics at both middle and high school levels, including teaching mathematics for the Commonwealth Governor’s School program. This summer, he taught during the summer extension program for middle school students seeking to accelerate in mathematics. Utt is highly involved in school clubs and activities, serving currently as the sponsor of the Junior Beta Club and chapter adviser of the National Junior Honor Society at T. Benton Gayle. Additionally, Utt serves on the Stafford County School Board’s Gifted Advisory Committee, serving three of five years as the secretary and is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Utt has volunteered with Stafford Junction, providing after-school tutoring for low-income, at-risk students. To date, he has provided more than 100 hours of service with the organization. Further, he served on the Bylaws and Constitution Committee of Kappa Delta Pi, and served two, three-year terms on the Professional Rights and Responsibilities Commission for the Virginia Education Association

“Mr. Utt’s knowledge of how kids learn, especially with math, has been an unbelievable benefit to our programs,” stated Lynn Hamilton, Community Development Manager of Stafford Junction. “Mr. Utt has used his expertise to monitor our students’ grade level expectations in helping them be ready for the next level of learning.
