Cold weather homeless shelter opens Wednesday

by | Nov 14, 2021 | Non-Profits

From Micah Ministries:

The ongoing presence of Covid-19 will necessitate that the cold weather shelter operate from hotels again this year.

People will access the shelter by coming to the Micah Hospitality Center, 1013 Princess Anne St., Monday through Friday between 3pm and 4:30pm for screening. During this time, Micah staff will gather information on those seeking shelter and issue hotel vouchers.  A church bus is scheduled to come at 4:30pm each day to begin taking people to the hotel shelter.

People needing shelter outside of weekday screening times or on weekends will be able to access assistance through the homeless helpline, 540-358-5301.

The goal of the cold weather shelter is helping the community be a place where no one sleeps outside, at risk of freezing to death, during the winter. As such, the Micah Hospitality Center center will close on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Nov. 23, to allow staff to give more attention to those we are sheltering. We will re-evaluate these hours and the street homeless need when the weather gets warmer.

Volunteer church teams have been secured for bus transportation and support during screening times. If you would like to volunteer, but are not currently part of a church team, please contact [email protected].

Shelter operations begin Nov. 17.

One way to support this year’s winter shelter operations is putting together Hotel Kits, a bag of essential items that makes it a little easier to stay in a hotel for a time. These are given to folks who identify as living on the street and moved into a hotel shelter room to stay warm this winter.

Other useful donations that could make this year’s shelter run smoothly include:

Fred bus tickets, underwear, full size toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, razors), cold weather gear (i.e. hats and gloves).

Kits can be dropped of at 1013 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401. on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 10am and 2pm. To arrange other times contact [email protected].
