Fredericksburg District: I-95 clear after light snow

by | Jan 7, 2022 | Traffic

From VDOT:

Travelers are advised to use caution and allow extra travel time this morning in the Fredericksburg area and Northern Neck, with the potential for slick surfaces even on treated roads.

Light snow fell overnight, but no significant accumulation was reported. Crews are finishing road treatment on Interstate 95 and many primary routes this morning. Interstate 95 is clear, and primary roads are in clear to minor condition.

Today, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will resume work plowing subdivision streets and low-volume secondary roads, which remain in moderate condition with partial snow coverage. This work will continue until all roads have been made passable.

Fewer than a dozen state-maintained roads remain closed due to downed utility lines and tree debris. VDOT and utility crews are coordinating to prioritize roads without alternate routes in an effort to restore power and access for motorists.

VDOT crews are removing trees and debris from travel lanes to reopen roads as soon as possible, and will return over the next several weeks to collect any remaining debris from the state right-of-way.

Below-freezing temperatures are expected overnight Friday and Saturday evenings. Any moisture remaining on the road’s surface may refreeze, especially on routes carrying light traffic volumes, and ramps, bridges and overpasses.

If you must travel:

• Plan to allow extra travel time
• Significantly reduce your speed
• Wear your seat belt
• Increase following distance between vehicles to add reaction time
• Clean snow and ice from your vehicle before starting a trip. This will improve your visibility of the road ahead, and it will prevent snow and ice from becoming a flying debris hazard for other travelers.
